Revd Ric Thorpe appointed as Bishop of Islington

Today Downing Street has announced that the Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Ric Thorpe BSc, Rector of St Paul’s Shadwell with Ratcliffe St James in the diocese of London, to the Suffragan See of Islington in the diocese of London which has been in abeyance since 1923.

Ric trained for ministry here at Wycliffe Hall and has spent time at HTB St Paul, Onslow Square and been Priest in Charge of St Paul’s Shadwell and All Hallows, Bromley by Bow. The mandate for role will be to be a "bishop for church-plants" and support the burgeoning movement as it spreads across the country.

Wycliffe Hall Principal, Revd Dr Michael Lloyd was delighted at another alumnus appointment: "This is another wonderful appointment for the Diocese of London, and the wider Church – and not just because it is another Wycliffe old member!

I came across Ric a lot when I was working at St Mellitus – he has done a quite remarkable job at St Paul’s Shadwell and as the Bishop of London’s Adviser for Church Planting.  Our three London ordinands this year spoke very highly indeed of the talks he gave on their ordination retreat.  I am delighted with this appointment and look forward to welcoming Ric back to his old College as soon as his diary permits.

Ric, Louie, their children (and Springer Spaniel) will be very much in our prayers!"
