Doctor of Philosophy

This degree is awarded for research theses, not on the basis of general examinations. Guidance is therefore provided principally in the form of research supervision rather than formal teaching, though students registering for this degree will normally be expected to attend seminars designed for their needs.

Admission to the DPhil programme is through Oxford University graduate admissions, indicating Wycliffe Hall as your college of first choice.

Course Structure

Year 1

MSt (Research) in Theology

Years 2 & 3

Completion of DPhil Thesis
Viva voce examination

The DPhil thesis (not more that 100,000 words) is a substantial piece of work: it must constitute ‘a significant and substantial contribution to the field of learning within which the subject of the thesis falls.’

Applicants are normally expected to pass the Master of Studies (Research) in Theology as a first year probationary examination. Subject to satisfactory performance in this examination and a suitable research proposal, they are admitted to DPhil status at the beginning of their second year. In exceptional cases where candidates are exempted from the MSt, an alternative first year probationary test is required.

For the DPhil degree residence in Oxford is required for six terms. The normal length of time required to complete the qualification is three years. The maximum time allowed is four years. These periods can be extended with the permission of the board if there is good reason for so doing.
