Wycliffe is committed to placing the training of preachers at the core of theological education. This is shown by the appointment of the Vice Principal as Director of the Wycliffe Hall School of Preaching, giving a clear message about the priority of preacher-training at Wycliffe Hall.
We describe the threefold task with which Wycliffe Hall is engaged as: • Academic Learning • Practical Training • Spiritual Formation
All three relate to the training of preachers. We are aware that good preaching is a divine gifting; we are also aware that it is “taught and caught”.
To preach is, possibly, the noblest of callings. As the Apostle Paul reflected on the future appearing of Christ, he spoke about the urgency of his role ‘Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.’ (2 Corinthians 5:11).
Students have: • Weekly Preaching Classes; • Chapel Preaching & Opportunities to hear good preachers; • Preaching placements and peer-to-peer review; • A week of integrated teaching on preaching.
The School of Preaching seeks to serve the local church and network with other national preaching organisations. We also hope to be a venue for Consultations over the needs of Homiletics Tutors and also to foster academic research in this area.
