Revd Dr Andrew Atherstone
Tutor in History & Doctrine and Latimer Fellow
MA (Cantab), MSt, DPhil (Oxon), FRHistS
Most of Andrew’s working life so far has been a combination of ministry in the local church and theological study and teaching. He was on the staff team of congregations in Islington and Reading, before training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, followed by a curacy at Christ Church, Abingdon. He is now associate minister of Eynsham and Cassington, two villages just west of Oxford, where he lives with his wife Catherine and their three children.
Andrew’s research and writing is focussed upon the history of the churches in Britain, especially the relationship between Anglicanism and Evangelicalism. His publications include: Oxford’s Protestant Spy: The Controversial Career of Charles Golightly (2007), The Martyrs of Mary Tudor (second edition 2007) and Oxford: City of Saints, Scholars and Dreaming Spires (2008), and (as editor) The Heart of Faith: Following Christ in the Church of England (2008). He is research fellow of the Latimer Trust, the successor to Latimer House, an Anglican Evangelical research institute founded in Oxford in 1960.
Andrew’s wider involvement includes membership of the Church of England Record Society’s council and of the Group for the Renewal of Worship (GROW).
I am passionate about helping to train men and women for ministry in the local church as pastors, Bible teachers and evangelists, so that the Good News of Jesus Christ is joyfully and effectively proclaimed.
I am passionate about learning lessons from faithful Christian believers in previous generations, to challenge and encourage us today.
I am passionate about the continual reformation and renewal of the church, under the Word of God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, for the glory of the Lord Jesus.
