Revd Dr Elizabeth Hoare
Tutor in Prayer, Spirituality and Mission
Liz originally read history at Durham and taught history at secondary school level. Following a PhD in history which examined the impact of the Reformation on the Tudor royal household, Liz trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall. She then had a curacy in the East Riding and following three years teaching Church History at Cranmer Hall, she became priest-in-charge of a parish also in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Throughout this time Liz was developing an interest in accompanying people in prayer through the ministry of spiritual direction.
In 2000 she married another Anglican minister, Toddy, who had the care of eight rural churches in North Yorkshire and they now have a young son called Felix. During this period Liz helped out in parish work including developing a children’s ministry through ‘godly play’, as well as teaching spirituality at Durham and continuing to accompany people in prayer.
Liz writes a weekly column for the Church of England Newspaper under her maiden name and is involved in writing and editing Grove booklets. She was appointed to Wycliffe in 2007. Liz takes exercise by walking her two Labradors. She keeps chickens, is an avid reader of novels and enjoys baking cakes.
I am continually drawn to explore the rich dimensions of prayer in the Christian life and it is a huge privilege to walk alongside others as they discover new dimensions of praying. Scripture and a personal relationship with Jesus are the foundations of faith which have motivated and inspired me and I long to encourage others to discover the depths of the riches of the knowledge and love of God in Christ.
