Why Study at Wycliffe Hall?

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal
but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me”

Wycliffe has a vision for giving all its students a deeply spiritual, biblically grounded theology which is integrated into all aspects of their life. We cannot claim to give you all you will ever need to know. We can claim to give you the tools and materials to develop biblical and theological ways of facing issues in the future, to think in a Christian way.

Theology is not just for college and exams. It’s for life. So we encourage in ourselves and in you a commitment to lifelong learning and growth in the knowledge and service of God. Our aim is to give you not just a good grasp of theology, but a deeper trust in the God who in Jesus Christ has grasped hold of us.

Who Can Study Theology at Wycliffe Hall?

We welcome applications from anyone who would like to deepen and expand their knowledge and understanding of theology, biblical studies and Christian ministry. You may have a confirmed calling to serve God in church leadership or you may have a desire to be better equipped to serve as an ambassador for Christ in a secular setting or as a lay member of your church.  We hope that among the wide range of courses and study opportunities we offer you may find something that suits your need and calling.

Wycliffe Hall provides teaching of the highest standard. However we are not looking simply for academic excellence among staff and students, but for availability to participate in God’s work. We will enjoy teaching you if you see the importance of gospel-based theology for Christian ministry, and are eager to:

  • listen to others, as well as help them.
  • explore new ideas, and think for yourself.
  • ask, and be asked, hard questions.
  • re-orientate your thinking and your life under the rule of Christ today.
  • nurture others as together we get to know God better.

How Do We Study Theology at Wycliffe Hall?

As a full-time student at Wycliffe you will learn in community, and the community will shape your learning through:

  • corporate worship and regular exposition of the Bible.
  • lectures and interactive seminars or tutorials.
  • Focus Days and Integrated Study Weeks on key topics.
  • group Bible studies and sermon classes.

Most structured teaching takes place in the mornings, leaving several afternoons largely free for personal study. You are encouraged to think and reflect for yourself, with the support of tutors and fellow students as needed. Teaching on most courses is offered by Wycliffe’s own staff; teaching on the BA and on postgraduate courses is offered from across the University.

They are also welcome to attend University lectures. This is a great opportunity, since Oxford attracts many of the world’s leading thinkers and speakers.

  • corporate worship as a community of part-time students.
  • private reading and writing of assignments.
