Oxford Diploma in Ministry for Theology Graduates

This is a one or two-year course for Church of England ordinands who already have a degree in theology, and is designed specifically as preparation for Christian ministry. It is validated by the Oxford Partnership for Theological Education and Training, a body which brings together the theological colleges in Oxford. Students at Wycliffe Hall are also involved in many other aspects of training.

The one-year course is designed as a final year course, following a 1 year Diploma in Theology or Master of Studies, or 2-year Master of Philosophy.

The two-year course consists of 6 longer and 6 shorter pieces of work in various subjects, including: Ethics,  Liturgy, Pastoral Studies, Mission.

Course Structure

Ethics
Liturgy
Pastoral Studies
Mission

Two-year course

2 Pastoral projects
2 Study projects
2 Theological Long Essays

Mission

  • Work is marked internally and then submitted for external moderation.
  • Wycliffe Hall requires all ordinands to study Mission.
  • An individual programme is devised to cover any core areas necessary and to allow study in other subjects that are appropriate or required for the student's future ministry.
  • For the 2-year programme there are six additional supporting pieces of work, which are marked internally, and evidence of their satisfactory completion is sent with the moderated work.
  • There are no exams, although those taking the option to have Greek assessed separately will be required to sit a written test.

Teaching and Study

  • Most teaching is conducted by Wycliffe Hall staff in lectures and small group seminars.
  • Students may use the Bodleian Library of Oxford University.
  • Arrangements can also be made to use the Theology Faculty Library for a small fee.
  • Students may also attend university lectures by permission.
  • Some subject areas require course work in addition to the major pieces of work listed above.
