Master of Philosophy

This is an Oxford University degree of a high academic standard designed particularly for those who have graduated in Theology (with an upper second class degree) and wish to do more advanced work in one of the main areas of the subject.  It is a valuable preparation for the teaching of the subject at an advanced level.  Church of England ordinands need special permission to pursue this course of study.

Course Structure

Year 1

Written examinations in 3 or 4 papers chosen from:

  1. Biblical Studies
  2. Christian Doctrine
  3. Ecclesiastical History
  4. Christian Ethics

Year 2

A thesis of 20-30,000 words
A viva voce examination

Teaching and Study

  • Work is done under a supervisor appointed by the Faculty Board.
  • Lectures or classes relating to the main topics are provided by the faculty.
  • Teaching is by means of lectures, classes, seminars, and individual tuition, according to circumstances and at the discretion of the organisers of the course concerned. Arrangements vary from one MPhil course to another.
