Master of Studies in Theology

This is an Oxford University postgraduate degree of a high academic standard requiring a good upper second class degree. It is designed to provide specialist postgraduate study in one particular area and forms a suitable foundation for post-graduate research leading to a Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy degree.  Church of England ordinands require special permission to pursue this course; they may supplement it with the 1-year Oxford Diploma in Ministry for Theology Graduates.

  • The degree is awarded on the basis of two or three examination papers, one of which may be (and in some courses, must be) substituted by a dissertation of 10-15,000 words. In some courses three shorter essays may be substituted for an examination paper. There will also be a viva voce (i.e. oral) examination.

Teaching and Study

  • Teaching is by means of lectures, classes, seminars, and individual tuition, according to circumstances and at the discretion of the organisers of the course concerned. Arrangements vary from one MSt to another.
  • Each student is assigned a general supervisor, whose duty it is to advise concerning the choice of subjects and on any questions relating to academic work, to direct you to the appropriate classes and to appoint special supervisors, as necessary, to direct work on particular topics.
