Certificate in Theology
This is a two-year certificate course of the University of Oxford. It is designed specifically as preparation for Christian ministry, and constitutes the first two years of the BTh programme. Students at Wycliffe Hall are also involved in many other aspects of training.
Course Structure
Year 1
Old Testament A New Testament A Christian Life and Thought Christian Witness and the
Year 2
New Testament B Christian Doctrine Christian Ethics Christian Worship Contemporary World
- Students take 4 papers each year, some by written exam in May and some by long essay in May or September.
- Students may study Greek in both years, and may also study Hebrew in their 2nd year.
- Church of England ordination students also do a Field Study in their 2nd year.
- On completing the CTh, students may request to transfer to the BTh, and complete this part-time: see Bachelor of Theology – Mixed Mode.
Teaching and Study
- Most teaching is conducted by Wycliffe Hall staff in lectures and small group seminars.
- Each subject requires 4 short essays (as well as the assessed exam or long essay).
- Students have free access to the Theology Faculty Library and to the Bodleian Library of Oxford University.
- Students may also attend university lectures.
