Dr Philip Johnston

Tutor in Old Testament and Hebrew

BA, BD, MTh, PhD

Philip is a traveller: he grew up in the Philippines, was educated in England, worked with a Belgian Baptist church, and studied theology in Belfast, where he became an Old Testament tutor. He later moved to Cambridge for doctoral research on "The Underworld and the Dead in the Old Testament”. After lecturing at St Andrews, he came to Wycliffe Hall in 1995.  He has written in French and English, including: Les Psaumes (Editions Clé, 1995), Shades of Sheol (Apollos, 2002) and Deuteronomy (BRF, 2005). He has also co-edited several books and the journal Themelios, and has been a translation consultant for the New Life and ESV Bibles and member of an EA Theological Commission. Philip has been involved in the leadership of Northway Evangelical Church in Marston/Headington, and unwinds best with a squash or badminton racquet.

“My vision is to bring the OT to life in its context - its rich story, colourful people, diverse texts, and sometimes puzzling theology – so that we can understand better how it relates to our context.”
